Wireless Home Network diagram
I’ve just finished making the diagram for my home network (shown below). My wireless home network contains the following components — a wireless modem provided by the Internet Service Provider, a network server, a wireless broadband router and the devices that connect via wifi.
Network Components
1. Wireless Modem - the wireless modem has been provided by the Internet Service Provider. The wireless modem provides the needed connection to the Internet and is connected to my Wireless Broadband Router (a Linksys WRT54G).
2. Wireless Broadband Router - this is the Linksys WRT54G wireless broadband router. It is a firewall, router, switch and wireless access point combined. I have actually installed a DD-WRT firmware into the router instead of using the original firmware. The DD-WRT firmware offers additional functionality than the original firmware like bandwidth management, DNS service, extended DHCP service and additional authentication and security features. You can also opt to modify the Linksys hardware to put in a SD memory reader for additional memory expansion.
3. Network server - the server provides additional functions such as network file service (half a terrabyte of storage for our files), print services, scanning, web service (for our development activities). It runs on a Linux distribution call CentOS (http://www.centos.org).
4. Network devices - these are the different network devices that the family use like wifi-enabled cell phones, PDAs, notebooks and desktop computers.
