400 Gigabytes in one optical disc

As if the 25-gigabyte paper disc from Sony and Toppan is not enough for our personal digital storage needs, Pioneer has created the world’s first 16-layer (ok let’s do away with 4-layer, 8-layer and just skip to 16 altogether) optical disc capable of storing 400GB of read only data.

That should be more than enough to store your 100 most loved full-length DVD videos (or is it?). You can read more about it at the Akihabara News web site.

Firefox vs IE video

Being a believer that Firefox is such a great web browser in all aspects, I just couldn’t resist the temptation to just post a video here. What can I say, the video says it all. If you haven’t tried using Mozilla’s Firefox web browser (especially version 3.0), you’re missing a lot. :-)

It’s Official, Firefox holds Guinness World Record

This is great news for the supporters and users of Mozilla’s Firefox web browser. The Guinness World Record for the most software downloaded in 24 hours is now being held by Mozilla’s Firefox. On June 18, 2008 8,002,530 people downloaded Firefox 3.

You can join the more than 8 million people enjoying the Net by using Firefox as your web browser.  Here’s my post about the Firefox 3.0 web browser.

Google reads Flash content

This is good news for Flash developers. Google has recently done a lot of improvements in their indexing technology to be able to include in their index content made from Adobe Flash.

Expect your web site’s Flash content to be more searchable using Google Search. In the past creating content using Flash is an obstacle for Search Engine Optimization but now that Google has made inroads into the improvement of indexing Flash content, web sites can not only have great content but also great looks and functionality!

Paint.NET Image Editor

If you’re a casual Windows user or a Linux user who happens to have a need to use Windows (for one reason or another), one of the first things you’ll probably do is try and find free software for your Windows PC. An image editor is a given especially if you have a blog. One free image editor is Paint.NET

Windows XP support until 2014

At last Microsoft has given in to public pressure to extend supporting Windows XP. Microsoft will continue supporting Windows XP until 2014 by providing security patches and updates. But it seems that Microsoft will still be discontinuing the sale of Windows XP after June 2008.

It’s actually good news for me since I use Windows XP but I don’t want to migrate to Windows Vista simply because it is too much of a resource hog. With news of Nokia open sourcing the Symbian OS, maybe we can all have a PC Suite version running flawlessly on Linux after all it’s the only obstacle that I have since most of the PC games I play is now well supported by the recently released Wine 1.0.

Firefox 3.0 startup page

Mozilla Firefox 3.0 web browser

I’ve been using the Firefox browser for as long as I can remember. It’s one of those software that makes my computer “complete”. One of the things that I’ve liked about Firefox (Mozilla, back then) is tabbed browsing — I couldn’t imagine surfing the Net without it.

World’s First Powerless Air Cooler on a Mainboard

msi-powerless-heatsink-3Just got back from a great two week vacation and to start off I just read this article about the world’s first powerless (yup, it doesn’t use electricity on the heat sink fan) air cooler on motherboards. With all the thrust towards ECO friendly designs these days, this heat-powered design for heat sinks is a very “cool” idea.

MSI has actually created a heat sink cooling design that doesn’t use electricity for the fan. The fan is instead powered by the very heat generated by the CPU. Although it will probably score any points on power savings for you as an individual, think of how much power it can save if you consider the millions of computers on the planet.
